English-speaking couples therapy in a system that mostly isn't
Norway's public system is excellent and largely closed to you. The family counselling service, familievernkontoret, is free but works in Norwegian, has waiting times of several weeks, and prioritises families with children under 18. Couples therapy is not a diagnosis, so your fastlege cannot refer you to a psychologist for it. In practice, couples therapy in Norway is a private service, and English-speaking couples therapy is a private service you have to find yourself.
This page is where you find it. For the full picture of how the system works for internationals, what it costs across Oslo, and how to choose a therapist, read our guide to couples therapy in Oslo in English. This page is about working with us.
Who this is for
International couples in Oslo. You moved for a job, for love, for a change, and the relationship is carrying weight it was not built for, far from everyone who knew you. Expat and relocated couples: the four phases of moving abroad →
Mixed Norwegian-international couples. One of you is on home ground with family, language and cultural fluency; the other has you. Therapy in English puts you on equal linguistic footing, and we hold both cultural frames rather than treating Norwegian norms as the baseline. Bilingual and cross-cultural couples →
Couples where one of you commutes abroad or travels constantly. Oslo to London on Monday, back on Thursday. The relationship lives in the re-entries. When one of you travels constantly →
Founder and executive couples. Oslo's startup and finance scene is small, and the pressures are the same as anywhere. Couples therapy for founders → · For executives and high-achieving couples →
Couples outside Oslo. Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø. Online means an English-speaking couples therapist is available wherever in Norway you are.
Couples who are unsure whether to stay in Norway, or together. The two questions often sit on top of each other. Should we separate? Discernment counseling →
How sessions work in Norway

Language. English, Norwegian, or both within a session. Which language therapy happens in is itself a decision for international couples, and we talk it through in the consultation.
Format. 60-minute sessions as standard, 90 minutes for the first session and for two-location sessions when one of you is abroad. Weekly or fortnightly. Both of you on one screen at home is the default.
Intensives. A two-day online intensive, twelve hours across two consecutive days, replaces months of weekly sessions. For couples in Norway it is 35,000 NOK including preparation and follow-up. Intensive couples therapy →
Methods. Emotionally Focused Therapy as the organising lens, with Gottman-derived tools where they help. EFT explained →
No paperwork barrier. No referral, no personnummer, no enrolment in the public system. You book directly and receive an invoice.
Cost and insurance in Norway
A 60-minute couples session is 1,700 NOK. Private couples therapy in Oslo typically runs 1,700–4,000 NOK per session, so we sit at the accessible end of the specialist range.
Couples therapy is not reimbursed by HELFO or NAV. Some Norwegian private health insurance plans through employers cover sessions with authorised psychologists; check whether couples sessions qualify. International plans such as Cigna Global, Allianz and Bupa often cover therapy under mental health benefits, and employer wellbeing budgets at international companies in Oslo increasingly reimburse therapy directly. We provide an invoice you can submit yourself.
Privacy in a small international community
Oslo's international community is small enough that you may know people at the same clinic. Online couples therapy means no waiting room, no clinic address, and no recurring appointment anyone could notice. Sessions are not recorded, and nothing enters an employer or insurance record unless you choose to submit for reimbursement.

Frequently asked questions
Can we get couples therapy in English in Oslo without a referral?
Yes. Couples therapy in Norway is a private service you book directly. You do not need a referral from your fastlege, a Norwegian personnummer, or enrolment in the public system. Book the free consultation and we take it from there.
Do you see couples in person in Oslo?
No. Aether Practice is an online practice. Sessions are by secure video with both of you together at home, or in two locations when one of you is abroad. That is also what makes us available to couples in Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim and Tromsø, not only Oslo.
What if one of us is Norwegian and prefers Norwegian?
We work in both languages, and in both within one session if that is what the couple needs. Many mixed couples choose English so neither partner has a linguistic advantage; others alternate. We decide together in the consultation.
How much does couples therapy cost in Oslo?
Private couples therapy in Oslo typically runs 1,700–4,000 NOK per session. Our 60-minute session is 1,700 NOK, invoiced directly, with a free 15-minute consultation before any booking. The two-day intensive is 35,000 NOK.
Is it covered by Norwegian insurance?
Not by HELFO or NAV. Some employer private health plans cover sessions with authorised psychologists; check whether couples sessions qualify. International plans often cover therapy under mental health benefits, and we provide an invoice you can submit.
Can we start if only one of us is sure?
Yes. You can start alone, and partners who begin on their own frequently shift the dynamic enough that the other joins. A reluctant partner can also come to the free consultation only, with no commitment beyond fifteen minutes.
