Online Couples Therapy Across the US and Norway: For Couples Who Don't Live in One Place

Online couples therapy is evidence-based relationship therapy delivered by secure video, with both partners together or in two locations, scheduled across time zones. Aether Practice works with couples in New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area and Norway, and with couples who move between them: partners who travel for work, long-distance and commuter relationships, expats and relocated couples, and couples who don't share a first language. Sessions run in English or Norwegian, daytime and evening in US and European time, with a free 15-minute consultation to start.

Why online, and why across two continents

Most online couples therapy is a local practice that added video. The therapist is in one city, the couple is in the same city, and the camera replaced the commute.

That's useful. It isn't what this is.

Aether Practice was built for couples whose lives don't fit one city. One partner in New York for the quarter, the other in Oslo. A founder who's in a different time zone every second week. A Norwegian-American couple who moved for a job and don't know if they're staying. A relationship conducted across an ocean with a visa application in the middle of it. For these couples, the question isn't whether the therapist is nearby. It's whether the therapist can hold a session at 8am Pacific and 5pm Oslo, in the right language, with one partner in a hotel.

We can, because that's the practice.

Who this is for

Couples where one of you is always somewhere else. Consultants, executives, crew, academics, athletes, founders. The relationship happens in the gaps between trips, and the gaps are where it's breaking. Couples therapy when one of you travels constantly →

Long-distance and commuter couples. Two cities, two countries, a weekend marriage, a relationship waiting on paperwork. You've never had a therapy option that lets you both be in the room. Long-distance and commuter couples →

Expats and relocated couples. You moved for a job, for love, for a change. The relationship is carrying weight it wasn't built for, far from everyone who knows you. Expat and relocated couples →

Couples who don't share a first language. Therapy in whose language? With a therapist from whose culture? Bilingual and cross-cultural couples →

International couples in Norway. English-speaking therapy in a system that mostly isn't. Couples therapy in Oslo in English →

Couples in New York or San Francisco who simply prefer online. No commute, no waiting room, evening slots, and a therapist who isn't someone you'll run into at a school event.

Does it work?

Yes. Video-delivered couples therapy has been studied directly and performs comparably to in-person work on relationship satisfaction and communication outcomes, including for Emotionally Focused Therapy. The full research picture, the situations where online is a worse choice, and the setup that makes it work are in Online couples therapy: does it work? That article is the canonical answer; we won't repeat it here.

How sessions work

Platform. Secure, encrypted video. No account creation; you receive a link.

Configuration. Both partners in one room on one screen is the default and works best. Two locations on two screens is fully supported for long-distance couples and travelling partners; we've run hundreds of three-point sessions and the format has its own rhythm.

Length. 60 minutes standard; 90 minutes for first sessions and for couples in two locations, where the extra time covers the loss of shared physical space.

Scheduling. Daytime and evening across Eastern, Pacific and Central European time. For couples split across continents we find the overlap window and hold it.

Language. English or Norwegian, or both within a session. How that works →

Continuity. If a partner moves, travels, or relocates mid-therapy, the therapy moves too. This is the structural advantage of a practice that isn't a building.

Intensives. One- to three-day online intensives are available for couples who want concentrated work. Intensive couples therapy →

Privacy

Online couples therapy from a private practice means no waiting room, no appearance on a clinic's premises, and no record in an employer or insurance system. For couples in small expat communities, in public-facing roles, or in cities where everyone knows someone, this matters.

Sessions are not recorded. Clinical confidentiality applies, with the standard legal limits, which we explain at the outset and which vary by jurisdiction.

Where we work

Aether Practice works with couples in New York, California and Norway, and with couples whose members are split between those places or travelling from them. Sessions are online, wherever you are within those jurisdictions and, for Norway, nationwide.

If you're elsewhere, ask in the consultation; we'll tell you plainly whether we can work with you or who can.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do couples therapy if we're in different cities?

Yes. Two-location sessions are a standard format here, not an exception. Each partner joins from their own screen; sessions run 90 minutes to account for the loss of shared physical space. Many long-distance couples have never had a therapy option that lets both be present; this is that option.

What time zones do you cover?

Eastern, Pacific and Central European as standard, with sessions available from early morning to evening in each. For couples split across the Atlantic, we find the overlap, typically late morning US / late afternoon Europe, and hold it as a recurring slot.

Do you work in Norwegian or English?

Both, and both within a session if that's what the couple needs. Which language therapy happens in is itself a decision for international couples, and we'll talk it through in the consultation.

Is online couples therapy as private as in-person?

More so in most respects: no waiting room, no clinic address, no recurring visit anyone could notice. The requirement is on your side: a private space where you can both speak freely. Sessions aren't recorded, and nothing enters an employer or insurance record.

What if one of us is travelling on session day?

The session happens from wherever they are, with a private space and a stable connection. If that isn't possible, we reschedule rather than run a session where one partner is in a lobby. Travelling partners are a core part of this practice; we plan around it.

Can we combine weekly sessions with an intensive?

Yes. Some couples alternate: online weekly sessions for routine work, and an online intensive for a difficult stretch or to break through. Either way the therapy stays with you wherever you are.

Do you work with couples outside New York, California and Norway?

Ask. Our standard jurisdictions are those three; depending on where you are and the nature of the work, we can sometimes help or can point you to someone who can.

If your relationship lives in two places, or in airports, or in a country that isn't either of yours, the usual advice to "find a therapist near you" has never quite applied. Book a free consultation. Fifteen minutes, from wherever you both are.
